Q: How do you measure the noise-canceling performance of the device?
A: The performance of QuietOn’s active noise-canceling wireless earplugs is measured by testers using a tiny but precise microphone—specifically the Knowles SPU1410LR5H-QB.

We first measure and create calibration files for accurate signal response. Then, the microphone is placed in the tester’s ear. A calibrated speaker (custom Pekka Tuomela Hifi 45/3) plays a sine sweep at 85 dB from 1 meter away.

By recording this signal, we get what's called an open-ear measurement.

Next, we insert the earplug and replay the test signal—keeping the ear's position and orientation identical during both measurements.

Our founder Janne came up with the idea for QuietOn during a long-haul flight, wondering whether it was possible to create a pair of active noise-canceling earplugs that didn’t require a power cord and were comfortable for extended wear. He teamed up with his colleague Matti—also a former Nokia engineer and now our CTO—to develop the product. And that's how QuietOn was born!

Our first crowdfunding campaign launched on Indiegogo in 2015, raising nearly HKD 100 million and receiving praise from numerous users. We soon began developing the second generation — QuietOn Sleep, which saw great success in the U.S., Taiwan, and Hong Kong, with over 5,000 backers and over HKD 100 million raised in total.
